Not Sure What to Do to Your Lawn?

The end of winter spells the beginning of spring maintenance and lawn care to make sure that your yard looks its best in the summer. Our lawn service has provided this guide on what to do when it comes to raking and watering your grass to ensure it remains healthy and attractive.

Rake or De-Thatch the Yard

Try not to walk or work on your lawn until the thaw has ended. This will prevent you from damaging your grass. Additionally, it’s important to do the following:

  • Before your first mow, make sure you rake your yard to loosen any matted grass clumps and prevent thatch buildup.
  • Thatch are layers of roots, leaves, and dead grass that build up between the soil and the live grass, which can prevent water and air from reaching the grass beneath.
  • Springtime rakes are highly recommended for the first rake of the season.
  • Never rake when the soil is muddy or soft, as this will mean you will pull up healthy grass.

Aerate the Soil

Another good way to reduce thatch and compacted soil is by using a core aerator. This helps to remove plugs of soil so air, water, and nutrients are able to reach the grassroots.

  • Aerate warm-season grass starting from late spring to summer.
  • A thriving lawn will need core aeration every two or three years.
  • Aerate cool season grass in the early spring or autumn.
  • Aerate clay soil once a year.

Water the Lawn

Spring irrigation does vary by region. Typically, grass will need an inch of water every week, whether from rain or an irrigation system or hose.

  • When you water your lawn, water deeply to encourage long, deep roots.
  • To avoid evaporation in the heated air during late spring and summer, water early in the day, before 10 a.m.
  • A way to test whether your lawn needs watering is to step on and off your grass and see how fast the blades bounce back. If the blades are slow to bounce back or are wilted, curled, or dull in color, it may be time to water.
